Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 16, 2026

Pet Thrifter is a community site for honest pet product reviews. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. We do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising or analytics trackers.

Information you give us

Account details. When you sign up we store a username, an email address, and — if you sign up with a password — a one-way hash of that password. We never store the password itself. You may also add a profile picture and a short bio.

Pet profiles. If you add a pet, we store what you enter: name, species, breed, age, free-text notes, and any dates you choose to track (birthday, gotcha day, medication and vaccination due dates). Pet profiles are yours; they are not published to other members.

Things you post. Reviews, ratings, community threads, comments and product requests are stored with your username attached and are visible to anyone visiting the site, including people who are not signed in.

Information from Facebook and Google

If you choose “Continue with Facebook” or “Continue with Google”, that provider sends us a limited profile so we can create or find your account. We request only the basic profile and your email address.

From Facebook we receive and store:

  • your Facebook user ID, which is how we recognise you on your next sign-in;
  • your name, used only to suggest a starting username;
  • your profile picture URL, used as your avatar;
  • your email address — only if you grant the email permission. Facebook does not always provide one. If we do not receive an email address, your account is created without it and we ask you to add one yourself.

Google sends the equivalent: a Google user ID, name, profile picture and verified email address.

We do not receive your friend list, your posts, or anything else from your social account, and we never post anything to it. If an account already exists with the same email address, we link the two rather than creating a duplicate.

Information we collect automatically

Our server writes an operational log line for each request — the HTTP method, the path, the response status, how long it took, and the account id if you were signed in. These logs exist to diagnose errors and abuse, and are not used to build a profile of you.

We do not use cookies for tracking, and we do not embed advertising or analytics trackers. When you sign in, your session token is kept in your browser’s local storage so you stay signed in; signing out removes it.

How we use it

  • to create your account and keep you signed in;
  • to attribute your reviews, comments and requests to you;
  • to show you your own pet profiles and reminders;
  • to let moderators review submitted content and enforce our terms;
  • to keep the service running, secure, and free of abuse.

We do not use your data for advertising, we do not sell or rent it, and we do not share it with data brokers.

Who we share it with

We share data only with the infrastructure providers that run the service on our behalf: our application and database host, and our frontend host. They process data only to provide hosting.

We also exchange data with Facebook or Google at the moment you choose to sign in with them — that exchange is initiated by you, and their handling of it is governed by their own privacy policies.

We may disclose information if we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect the rights and safety of our members.

How long we keep it

We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. Content you posted publicly may remain visible after you delete your account unless you ask us to remove it as well — say so in your deletion request and we will.

Operational server logs are short-lived and are not retained long-term.

Your choices and your rights

You can edit your profile and your pets at any time from your profile page. You can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account and everything attached to it.

See the data deletion instructions for how to make that request, including how to disconnect Pet Thrifter from your Facebook account.

Children

Pet Thrifter is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be announced on the site.
